In this project, poet Ronnie K. Stephens responds to the art of Irish illustrator Desarae Lee. I created the cover and interior design of this project. My main goal was to reflect the tone of Stephens’ and Lee’s work in the typeface choice and shape of the text block. To harmonize with the spindly, dainty quality of the illustrations, I chose the font De Valencia for the titles and Garamond for the body. I typeset each spread so that the width of the text block reflected the width of the artwork (which varied throughout the book). I was honored to be a part of this project. It won Best in Category for Poetry Book Design, and then Best in Show at the New England Book Show in 2018.

This was one of my first book projects--to date I’ve sent more than 20 books to the printer, but this remains one of my favorites. My co-Editor-in-chief and I decided to draw inspiration from the 1978 issue of the Emerson Review, which features an octopus, so our goal was to make a 2015 version of it with this scientific drawing of a “common Octopus” from the 1800’s, and some 70’s throwback colors and type.
